The lower chamber heats the cold water causing pressure from the water boiling. This forces the water to travel upwards and through the coffee grounds. After a couple of minutes of this the brew comes out of the spout and goes into the upper chamber. At this time you need to remove the espresso maker from the heat. Then leave it until the steam coming from the lower chamber stops. There is a metal filter and safety valve in the lower chamber. The brewed coffee ends up in the upper tank of the espresso maker.
